A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Anne Black, D.C., was celebrated August 28, 2018, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg. Sister Anne died August 22, 2018, at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. She was 86 years of age and 66 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Richmond, Va., on December 13, 1931, Sister Anne (baptized Anne Catherine) was one of five children born to Joseph Francis and Sarah (Burnette) Black.
A 1949 graduate of St. Gertrude’s High School, Richmond, Sister Anne entered the Community of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in June 1952 from St. Bridget’s Church, Richmond. Sister earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Secretarial Science with a Minor in Library Science from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg in 1953.
Following initial formation, Sister Anne first served as a Business Teacher at Immaculate Conception Academy in Washington, D.C., (1953 to 1963). Sister next served as Receptionist at Marian Retreat House, Baltimore, Md., (1963 to 1964). Sister Anne then ministered as Librarian at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Emmitsburg, (1964 to 1967); Bishop England High School, Charleston, S.C., (1967 to 1974); and St. Catherine Labouré School, Wheaton, Md., (1974 to 1985). Sister Anne was missioned to Emmitsburg in 1985. During her many years there, she served as Seton Center Receptionist and Library Assistant at the Provincial House. In 1998, Sister Anne began her Ministry of Prayer where she served until the time of her death.
Sister Anne was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Joseph; and her sister, Sister Helen Black, S.P. She is survived by her brother, John (Joanne) Black of Richmond; and her sister, Sister Mary Ellen Black, O.S.B, of Bristow, Va.; a great niece and a great nephew; and her Sisters in Community.
