A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Catherine Marie McGranary, D.C., was celebrated June 21, 2016, at the Daughters of Charity DePaul House Chapel in Albany, N.Y. Burial followed at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands, N.Y. Sister Catherine Marie died June 18, 2016, at St. Louise House in Albany. She was 96 years of age and 69 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Wilmington, Del., on February 1, 1920, Sister Catherine Marie (baptized Mary) was the only child born to Anthony Joseph and Mary Cecilia (Keefe) McGranary. Sister graduated from Saint Peter and Saint Paul High School in Wilmington in 1938. She entered the Daughters of Charity in January of 1947.
Sister Catherine Marie earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secretarial Science from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Md., in 1965. She also studied Pastoral Care at Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Mass.
After initial formation, Sister Catherine Marie served at House of Providence, Syracuse, N.Y., (1948-1950); St. Martin’s School, Baltimore, Md., (1950-1954); Carney Hospital, Boston, Mass., (1954-1955); St. Ann’s School, Bridgeport, Conn., (1955-1957); Seton High School, Baltimore, Md., (1957-1960); St. Peter’s, School, Wilmington, Del., (1960-1964); St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Emmitsburg, Md., where Sister served in Formation (1964-1965); Utica Catholic Academy, Utica, N.Y., (1965-1966); Portsmouth Elementary School, Portsmouth, Va., (1966-1969); St. Ann School, Bridgeport, Conn., (1969-1976); St. James Parish, Johnson City, N.Y., (1976-1980); St. Agatha’s Center, Canastota, N.Y., (1980-1981); Good Samaritan Hospital, Pottsville, Penn., (1981-1983); St. Joseph’s Parish, Holbrook Mass., (1983 -1984); St. Agatha’s Center, Canastota, N.Y., (1984-1985); St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, N.Y., (1985-1991); St. Vincent’s House, Albany, N.Y., (1991-1992); St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Emmitsburg, Md., where Sister served as a Docent at the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (1992); Clark House, Binghamton, N.Y., (1992-1996), Labouré Center Sisters Residence, Boston, Mass., (1996); St. Agatha’s Sisters Residence, Canastota, N.Y., (1996-1999); St. Mary’s Sisters’ Residence, Rochester, N.Y., (1999-2000); St. Louise House, Albany, N.Y., (2000); and St. Joseph’s Residence, Holbrook, Mass., (2000-2007).
Sister Catherine Marie served as the Local Community Superior at St. Peters in Wilmington (1960 – 1964), St. Agatha’s in Canastota (1984-1985), and St. Mary’s in Rochester (1985-1991).
In 2007, Sister joined the Ministry of Prayer at St. Louise House and served there until the time of her death. Sister Catherine Marie is survived by her cousin Mrs. Joan Reardon of Wilmington, Del., and by her Sisters in Community.
