A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Elizabeth Ann Baldino, D.C., was celebrated April 11, 2018, at DePaul House Chapel in Albany, N.Y. Burial followed at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands, N.Y. Sister died April 6, 2018, at St. Louise House in Albany. Sister was 101 years of age and 81 years vocation.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on February 27, 1917, Sister Elizabeth Ann (baptized Euphemia) was the second of three children born to Dominic and Rosina (Occhiuti) Baldino. Both of Sister’s parents were born in Naples, Italy. Sister’s father immigrated to the United States from Calabria, Italy, at the age of 14. Sister’s mother died giving birth to her younger sibling, Dominic; Phyllis was the oldest. The girls, ages four and two at the time of Dominic’s birth, were raised at the Gonzaga Home by the Daughters of Charity while their baby brother was raised by an aunt. Six years later, their father was killed in a gas explosion.
Sister Elizabeth Ann joined the Community of Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in May 1936 from Immaculate Conception Church, Philadelphia. Sister Elizabeth Ann graduated from John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia in 1935. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Md., in 1959; she earned her Master of Science Degree in English from Fairfield University, Fairfield, Conn., in 1970.
After initial formation, Sister Elizabeth Ann taught at St. Vincent’s Home and School, Detroit, Mich., (1937 to 1943); St. Joseph’s School, Baltimore, Md., (1943 to 1946); St James School, Johnson City, N.Y., (1946 to 1957); St. Joseph Central High, Petersburg, Va., (1957 to 1967); McCloskey High School, Albany, N.Y., (1967 to 1969); and Seton High School, Endicott, N.Y., (1970 to 1976). Sister then began her service in parish ministry; she served at St. Vincent’s Church while living at St. Joseph’s Hall, Philadelphia, (1976 to 1978); and at St. Paul’s Church while living at St. Peter’s School, Wilmington, Del., (1978 to 1983). Sister next ministered at Kennedy Child Center, New York, N.Y., (1983 to 1984). She returned to parish ministry and served at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Bayside, N.Y., (1984 to 1992). She next served as Sacristan at DePaul Provincial House, Albany, N.Y., (1992 to 1995). Sister Elizabeth Ann was missioned three more times to Niagara Falls, N.Y., (1995 to 1996); DePaul Provincial House, Albany, N.Y., (1996 to 2003); and to St. Louise House, Albany, N.Y., in 2003 where she joined the ministry of prayer and served there until the time of her death.
Sister Elizabeth Ann was preceded in death by her parents and siblings. She is survived by her niece, Beth Larson; grandniece, Dawn Jones; her cousin, Carolyn Conboy; and her Sisters in Community.
