A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Margaret Ann Majors, D.C., was celebrated Feb. 16, 2015, at the Marian Chapel of the Sarah Community in Bridgeton, Mo. Burial followed Feb. 17 at Marillac Cemetery in Normandy, Mo. Sister Margaret Ann died Feb. 14 at 85 years of age at the Sarah Community in Bridgeton.
Born April 2, 1929 in Paris, Texas, Sister Margaret Ann (baptized Margaret Ann Majors) was the oldest of 13 children (five sons and eight daughters) born to James Hal Majors of Mt. Vernon, Texas, and Marguerite (Woods) Majors of Columbus, Miss. She was a 1952 graduate of St. Patrick High School in Chicago, Ill. Sister earned her degree in education from Xavier University in New Orleans, La., in 1980. She entered the Community of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in St. Louis, Mo., in August of 1950. She celebrated 64 years vocation in 2014.
After her initial formation, Sister Margaret Ann began her ministry as a Daughter of Charity in Birmingham, Ala., where she taught religion at St. Barnabas Grade School (parish school and CCD students) from 1955 to 1965. Sister was then missioned to Chicago where she assisted with clerical work for the CCD program at St. Patrick Grade School (1965–1968). Sister then moved to New Orleans where she served as secretary for the CCD program at St. Theresa School (1968–1970). Her next ministry was at Hotel Dieu Hospital in New Orleans where she served as a ward clerk and in accounting (1972–1974). Sister Margaret Ann then returned to St. Louis where she served part-time in early childhood education at St. Patrick Day Care Center and as a tutor at St. Vincent Hospital (1974–1975). Sister remained in St. Louis and next served in elementary education and as a CCD teacher at St. Catherine Labouré School in Sappington (1975–1978). She then was missioned to New Orleans to Incarnate Word School as a teacher aide and CCD instructor (1978–1980). After completing her degree, Sister was sent to St. Louis where she ministered as a preschool teacher at Guardian Angel Settlement Association (1983–1984). Sister then moved to Keokuk, Iowa, where she ministered as a teacher aide at St. Vincent Grade School (1984–1994). Next, Sister Margaret Ann served as a volunteer at St. Catherine Center in Waco, Texas (1994–1995). She then assisted with the thrift shop run by the Ladies of Charity in El Paso, Texas (1995–1996). Sister returned to the St. Louis area in June of 1996. She volunteered part-time at Caritas Center (1996–1999), DePaul Health Center (1996–2002), and the Sarah Community where she joined the Ministry of Prayer in 2000 and also served as the Naomi House receptionist for many years.
Sister Margaret Ann is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Mary Kate Dean, Martha Walz, Annette Werling and Jane Ellen Montour; and her brothers, Joe, Robert, Richard and Lawrence. Sister Margaret Ann is survived by her sisters, Elaine Mancuso of Marrero, La.; Harriet Rieder of Picayune, Miss.; and Genevieve Jeffries of Chalmette, La.; by her brother, Curtis Majors of Las Vegas, Nev.; as well as many nieces, nephews and her Sisters in Community.
