A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Margaret Flynn, D.C., was celebrated March 21, 2015, at Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville, Ind. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville. Sister Margaret died March 20 at 96 years of age at Seton Residence. She celebrated 72 years of vocation in December 2014.
Born April 30, 1918, in Deerfield Center, Mich., Sister Margaret (baptized Margaret Agnes Flynn) was one of 10 children born to James Cornelius and Margaret Isabelle (Walsh) Flynn. Sister Margaret was a 1937 graduate of Milford High School in Milford, Mich. Sister earned her Bachelor of Science degree in social science and education from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Md., in 1951. She earned her master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1954.
After initial formation, Sister worked as a house mother at St. Vincent’s Home in Albany, N.Y. (1944 – 1946), and at St. Vincent’s Home in Washington, D.C. (1949–1950). Sister ministered at Labouré Center in South Boston, Mass. (1954–1957). Sister Margaret served as directress of St. Joseph Seminary in Emmitsburg (1957–1958). Sister then served as a social worker for Catholic Charities of New York (1958–1963). Sister served as the full-time local superior for her Community in South Boston (1963–1966). She then was missioned to Washington, D.C., where she served as director of the National Conference of Catholic Charities (1966–1969). Sister was then appointed a provincial councillor for the Daughters of Charity Mater Dei Provincialate located in Chicago, Ill. (1969–1971), and then located in Evansville (1971–1981). When her term was finished in 1981, she served as a docent at the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg (1981–1982). She then was missioned to St. Mary’s Home in Mobile, Ala., where she served as administrator (1982–1987). In 1987, Sister became the archivist for Mater Dei Provincialate where she served until 2001 when she began her service in the Ministry of Prayer at Seton Residence in Evansville.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Isabel Flynn Walsh and Mary Flynn Timma; and her brothers Gerald, Robert, William, James, Joseph, Richard and Maurice Flynn. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, her Sisters in Community and many friends.
