Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul Sister Margaret Mary Robins died November 24, 2016, at the Daughters’ Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind. She was 95 years of age and 78 years vocation. A The Funeral Mass for Sister Margaret Mary was celebrated November 29 at Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville.
Sister Margaret Mary was born August 4, 1921, in St. Louis, Mo. Baptized Dorothy Marie, Sister was one of two children of Milton and Leona (Paige) Robins. Sister Margaret Mary was a 1938 graduate of St. Patrick High School in Chicago, IL. Sister earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Fontbonne College (University) in St. Louis, Mo., in 1948. She entered the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in St. Louis in May of 1938.
Following initial formation, Sister Margaret Mary served as Housemother, Teacher, and Bookkeeper at St. Thomas-on-the-Hill in Birmingham, Ala., (1939 – 1952); Elementary Teacher at St. Vincent DePaul Grade School in San Francisco, Cal., (1952 – 1960) and Immaculate Conception Academy, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, (1960 – 1967). From 1965 to 1967, Sister also served as Elementary Principal at Immaculate Conception Academy, Mayaguez. She then served as a Secondary Teacher at Immaculate Conception Academy, Mayaguez, (1967 – 1969). Sister Margaret Mary was missioned next to Cathedral Grade School, Natchez, Miss., where she served as Elementary Principal and Teacher (1969 – 1970). She then served as Elementary Teacher at St. Matthias School, St. Louis, Mo, (1970 – 1973); Middle School Teacher at St. Vincent Grade School, Perryville, Mo., (1973 – 1981); Elementary Teacher at Central Catholic Community School, St. Louis, (1981 – 1983); and Elementary Teacher at Corpus Christi District School, St. Louis, (1983 – 1986). Sister served as a GED Instructor and Teacher of English as Second Language at El Carmen Mission, San Antonio, Tex., (1986 – 1989) and as an Adult Basic Education Teacher at Education Service Center, Region XX, San Antonio (1989 – 2004). In July of 2004, Sister Margaret Mary joined the Ministry of Prayer at Seton Residence, Evansville, where she served until the time of her death.
While serving in San Antonio, Sister was honored with the Southside Adult Education Teacher of the Year Award in 1997.
Sister Margaret Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Joseph E. Robins. She is survived by her nephew, David Lee Robins; many friends; and her Sisters in Community.
