A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary Caroline Hriczko, D.C., was celebrated November 20, 2017, at DePaul House Chapel, Albany, N.Y. Burial followed at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands, N.Y. Sister Mary Caroline died at St. Louise House in Albany on November 9, 2017. Sister was 85 years of age and 63 years vocation.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y., on December 22, 1931, Sister Mary Caroline was baptized Caroline. She was one of seven children born to John and Karolina (Chanda) Hriczko. Sister joined the Community of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in December 1953 from St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church, Buffalo, N.Y.
Sister Mary Caroline was a 1948 graduate of East High School in Buffalo, N.Y. She earned her Diploma as a Registered Nurse in 1952 from Sisters Hospital in Buffalo. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree in 1956 at St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, Md. Sister earned her Masters of Science-Community Health Nursing Degree specializing in Gerontology from Boston University in Boston, Mass., in 1976.
Following her initial formation, Sister Mary Caroline ministered at the Seton Psychiatric Institute, Baltimore, Md., (1955 to 1961); Providence Hospital, Washington, D.C., (1961 to 1965); Seton Hospital, Waterville, Maine, (1965 to 1969); Labouré Center, Boston, Mass., (1969 to 1974); St. John of God Hospital, Brighton, Mass., (1974 to 1975); Nazareth Child Center, Boston, (1975 to 1976); Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, N.Y., (1976 to 1978); Sisters Hospital, Buffalo, (1978 to 1982); again at St. John of God Hospital, Brighton, (1982 to 1986); and again at Sisters Hospital, Buffalo, (1986 to 2003). In 2003, Sister joined the Ministry of Prayer at St. Louise House where she served until the time of her death.
Sister Mary Caroline was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings—Julia, Anna, Mary, Joseph, John Jr., and Steve. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and her Sisters in Community.
