A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary George Barlow, D.C., was celebrated November 2, 2018, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Wilmington, Del. Burial was November 3 at the Daughters of Charity Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg, Md.
Sister Mary George died October 25, 2018, at Christiana Hospital, Wilmington, Del., while on mission in Wilmington. She was 89 years of age and 69 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Wilmington, Del., on February 19, 1929, Sister Mary George (baptized Madeline Elizabeth) was one of seven children born to George Edward and Mary (Carney) Barlow. Sister graduated from Ursuline Academy, Wilmington, in 1946. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, Md., in 1956; and she earned her Master of Social Science Degree from Fordham University, New York, N.Y., in 1959.
Sister Mary George entered the Community of the Daughters of Charity from St. Patrick’s Parish, Wilmington, in December 1948. Following initial formation, Sister taught at St. Patrick School, Richmond, Va., (1950 to 1954); and at Immaculate Conception Academy, Washington, D.C, (1954 to 1959). Sister then ministered at the Kennedy Center, part of Catholic Charities for the Archdiocese of New York, (1959 to 1967). She served in Administration at Labouré Hall for Girls, Buffalo, N.Y., (1967 to 1969; while there, Sister served as the Local Community Superior), and at the Astor Home, Rhinebeck, N.Y., (1969 to 1976). During her years in New York, Sister developed state-of-the art Day Treatment and Group Home Programs. While at the Astor Home, Sister Mary George was elected to the Provincial Council of the Daughters’ former Northeast Province. From 1976 to 1977, she resided at DePaul Provincial House in Albany, N.Y. Sister then continued her role as Provincial Councillor and also served as Local Community Superior at De Paul Center, Vineland, N.J., (1977 to 1978). She then returned to DePaul House, Albany, where she served on the Council until 1984.
Sister’s next mission was to Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Bayside, N.Y., (1984 to 1990; while there, Sister served as the Local Community Superior). She served again at Kennedy Child Care Center, New York, (1990 to 1992); then returned to Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Bayside, (1992 to 2005; while there, Sister served once again as Local Community Superior from 2001 to 2005). Sister Mary George’s next mission was to Good Samaritan Sisters’ Residence, Pottsville, Penn., (2005 to 2007). While serving on these missions, Sister continued to provide creative and innovative ideas for programs. Sister then was missioned to St. Peter’s House, Wilmington, Del. There, she served as Director of Parish Outreach (2007 to January 2017), and as Parish Home Visitor.
Sister Mary George was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, George Barlow and Francis Barlow; and her sisters, Ellen Anklin, Mary Steffenberg, Jean Casey, and Catherine Day. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Evelyn “Chevy” Barlow of Clayton, N.C.; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and her Sisters in Community.
