A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Teresa Buckley, D.C., was celebrated Jan. 24, 2015, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg.
Sister Teresa died Jan. 20 at 83 years of age at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. In December 2014, she celebrated 61 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Cork City, Ireland, March 26, 1931, Sister Teresa was one of seven children born to Timothy and Catherine (Murphy) Buckley. She was baptized Veronica Teresa Buckley. Sister was a 1949 graduate of Miss Foley’s Private School, Cork City, Ireland. Sister moved to the United States following high school and was a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Washington, D.C., when she entered the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg December 31, 1953. Sister Teresa earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg in 1969. She completed her Master of Science degree in secondary school science at Villanova University in Villanova, Penn., in 1976.
After initial formation, Sister Teresa began her teaching ministry. She was an elementary teacher at St. Mary School in Troy, N.Y. (1955 – 1956); St. Pius X School in Greensboro, N.C. (1956 – 1961); St. Catherine Labouré School in Wheaton, Md. (1961 – 1963, 1976 – 1984 and 1985 – 1990); St. Michael School in Overlea, Md. (1963 – 1968); St. Charles School in Pikesville, Md. (1969 – 1974); Portsmouth Elementary School in Portsmouth, Va. (1974 – 1975); and Queen of Peace School in Washington, D.C. (1990 – 1992). In 1992, Sister began teaching high school students at St. Ann’s High School in Hyattsville, Md. She served there until July of 2013 when she entered the Ministry of Prayer at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg where she served until the time of her death.
Sister Teresa is survived by her brother, John Emmett Buckley of Falls Church, Va.; three sisters, Kathleen Mooney of Falls Church, Va., Phyllis (Bill) Gallagher of Potomac, Md., and Margaret Maura Weizenberger of Silver Spring, Md.; many nieces and nephews; many friends; and her Sisters in Community.
