A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Maureen Delahunt, D.C. was celebrated January 10, 2017, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg. Sister Maureen died January 7, 2017, at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. She was 86 years of age and 55 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, on May 3, 1930, Sister Maureen (baptized Maureen Carmel) was one of six children born to William Patrick and Sarah Agnes (Donovan) Delahunt. Sister entered the Daughters of Charity in August of 1961.
Sister Maureen earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, Md., in 1964; she earned her Master of Science Nursing Degree in Mental Health Nursing from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., in 1975.
Following initial formation, Sister Maureen served as a Nurse and Group Worker at the Astor Home, Rhinebeck, N.Y., (1964 to 1966); as Nurse Supervisor at the Seton Institute, Baltimore, Md., (1966 to 1973); as Director of Mental Health Center at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Jacksonville, Fla., (1975 to 1980); as Nurse and Cottage Supervisor, St. Vincent Infant Home, Timonium, Md., (1980 to 1981, during which time Sister Maureen served as the Local Community Superior); as Clinical Nurse Specialist at DePaul Medical Center, Norfolk, Va., (1981 to 1985, during which time Sister served as the Local Community Superior); as Director of Pastoral Care at Providence Hospital, Washington, D.C., (1985 to 1991, during which time Sister served as the Local Community Superior); and as Minister of Pastoral Care at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Jacksonville (1991 to 2005) and at Riverside Hospital, Jacksonville (1991 to 1996). In 2005, Sister was missioned to Emmitsburg where she served as Sacristan at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (2005 to 2010) and as the Local Community Superior of Bethany Community (2006 to 2009); and, in 2010, she entered the Ministry of Prayer at Villa St. Michael where she served until the time of her death.
Sister Maureen was preceded in death by her parents and four of her siblings. She is survived by her sister, Anne Provost, nieces, nephews and her Sisters in Community.
