A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Brigid Donoghue, D.C., was celebrated March 29 at the Marian Chapel of The Sarah Community in Bridgeton, Mo. Burial followed on March 30 at Marillac Cemetery in Normandy, Mo. Sister Brigid died March 24, 2016, at The Sarah Community. She was 85 years of age and 67 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in St. Louis on January 22, 1931, Sister Brigid (baptized Helen Marie) was one of seven children born to William Joseph and Catherine Winifred (Dowling) Donoghue. Sister entered the Daughters of Charity in July of 1948.
Sister Brigid earned her high school diploma from St. Vincent High School in Perryville, Mo., in 1949. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Fontbonne University (then College), St. Louis, in History and Philosophy in 1953. Sister completed her Master of Arts Degree in English at Xavier University in New Orleans, La., in 1959.
Following initial formation, Sister Brigid taught at St. Boniface School, Perryville, (1949 to 1953): St. Mary’s Home, Mobile, Ala., (1953 to 1955); St. Joseph School, New Orleans, (1955 to 1956); St. Vincent School, Donaldsonville, La., (1956 to 1959); St. Vincent High School, San Francisco, Ca., (1959 to 1961); Labouré High School, St. Louis, (1961 to 1978); St. Vincent High School, Perryville, (1978 to 1985); and Reicher Catholic High School, Waco, Tex., (1985 to 2011). At Reicher, Sister served as the English Department Chair from 1991 to 2011. While in Waco, Sister served on the Providence Foundation Board from 1996 to 2011. In 2011, Sister joined the Ministry of Prayer at The Sarah Community where she served until the time of her death.
Sister Brigid was preceded in death by her parents; three of her sisters: Jeanne Donoghue, Patricia Pool, and Pat (Kitty) Murphy; and her brother Jerry Donoghue. Sister is survived by her sister Mary Julia Taylor; her brother William J. Donoghue; many nieces and nephews; and her Sisters in Community.
