Daughters of Charity have served in the Detroit area since 1844 developing and serving in schools, hospitals, orphanages, mental health services, maternity homes, and doing multiple other good works. In 1910 Providence Hospital and its School of Nursing opened on Grand Boulevard in the city and in 1964 it moved to a new facility in the suburbs of Southfield and recently added a campus in Novi.
This year on April 20 the Daughters of Charity were honored with the Order of Charity award by Ascension Providence Hospital at its annual Friends’ Ball. Six sisters represented the 180 years of service and love which poured from the hearts of the Daughters of Charity. The celebratory gathering of about 500 guests in “black-tie” and beautiful formal dresses included a video greeting from Sister Teresa George and the gathering of the sisters on the stage for the presentation of a glass art award inscribed with the picture of a sister in the coronette.
The Friends Ball always raises money to support services for a population needing assistance. This year the event raised a record-breaking gross revenue of $404,000 to support women’s heart health services at Ascension Providence Hospital, Novi and Southfield. The proceeds will help ensure advanced diagnostics and treatment therapies are available to help women achieve and maintain cardiovascular health, regardless of ability to pay.
