Sister Gertrude (Gertrude Mary) Levy died on September 27, 2025 at Seton Residence in Evansville, Indiana. Sister Gertrude was born on November 15, 1919 in New Orleans, Louisiana and was one of nine children of Albert and Henrietta (Schaeffer) Levy. Sister graduated from St. Joseph High School in New Orleans and entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, Missouri in 1936.
After initial formation, Sister Gertrude served as a teacher in Long Beach, Mississippi; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans, Louisiana; Natchez, Mississippi; and Donaldsonville, Louisiana. She also ministered as a House Mother at LA Orphan Asylum in Los Angeles, and as a Home Supervisor for Marywood Home of Holy Infancy in Austin, Texas. Sister Gertrude then began her ministry in Development at Seton Hospitals in Austin, Texas. She was then sent to Seton Center in Kansas City, Missouri to serve as Development Director and returned to Austin, Texas to serve in that same capacity at St. Michael Academy and the following year as Mission Coordinator/Mission Affairs at Seton Medical Center. She then served as Director of Volunteers at Holy Cross Hospital, Assistant Director of Volunteers at Seton Northwest and then as Community Ambassador and Fund Raiser at Seton Family of Hospitals in Austin until 2014 when she came to Seton Residence to serve in the Ministry of Prayer and as a volunteer in the Development Office at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville.
A Wake Service was held on Wednesday, October 1 and the Mass of Christian Burial took place the following day, October 2, both in the Seton Chapel. Interment followed at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Albert, Joseph, Louis, Francis and Rev. Michael Levy, OMI and her sisters Sister Maxine Levy, D.C., and Sister Muriel Levy, D.C. She is survived by her sister, Mary Brown, many loving family members, her Sisters in Community and many friends.
