In Memoriam: Sister Jane Frances Fairley, D.C.

Sister Jane Frances Fairley, D.C.A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Jane Frances Fairley, D.C., was celebrated Oct. 30, 2013, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Sister Jane Frances was buried in the Sacred Heart Cemetery on the grounds of St. Joseph House in Emmitsburg.

Sister Jane Frances died on Oct. 26, 2013, at 91 years of age at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. In December of 2012, she celebrated 68 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.

Born in Baltimore, Md., on November 18, 1921, Sister Jane Frances was one of two children born to Thomas and Mary Fairley. She was baptized Jane Frances.

Sister Jane Frances graduated from Seton High School in Baltimore in 1940. She entered the Daughters of Charity in December of 1944.

Sister Jane Frances earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing degree from Boston College in Boston, Mass., in 1951. Sister served in nursing and nursing supervisory roles at Carney Hospital in Boston from 1946 to 1948 and again from 1950 to 1951; at DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk, Va., from 1948 to 1950; at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla., from 1951 to 1953; at St. John’s Hospital in Lowell, Mass., from 1953 to 1961; at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, N.Y., from 1961 to 1969; at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., from 1969 to 1975; at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md., from 1975 to 1981; at St. Ann’s Infant Home in Hyattsville, Md., from 1981 to 1986; at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Md., from 1986 to 1987; and at Jenkins Memorial Home in Baltimore from 1987 to 1994.

Sister Jane Frances ministered as a gift shop assistant at the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg from 1994 to 1995; then, she served as a minister to the homebound at St. Joseph Parish in Martinsburg, W.V., from 1995 to 2006. In 2006, Sister entered the Ministry of Prayer in Emmitsburg.

Sister Jane Frances is survived by a nephew, Martin Vittek and his wife, Carol, and their children, of Baltimore, Md.
