A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary Ann Bozel, D.C., was celebrated March 8, 2014, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg.
Sister Mary Ann died March 1, 2014, at 89 years of age at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. On Dec. 14, 2013, she celebrated 71 years of vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Baltimore, Md., on Aug. 18, 1924, Sister Mary Ann was the daughter of Richard W. and Josephine Albert Bozel. She was baptized Mary Ann.
Sister Mary Ann joined the Daughters of Charity in December 1942 in Emmitsburg. In 1963, Sister Mary Ann earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in social science from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg. In 1968, she earned her Master of Science degree in education from St. John’s University in Jamaica, N.Y.
For most of her life, Sister Mary Ann served in the field of education, specializing in the primary grades. Her missions as teacher were at St. John’s School in Albany, N.Y. (1944 – 1953); Cathedral Schools in Syracuse, N.Y. (1953 – 1957); Mother Seton School in Emmitsburg (1957 – 1967); and St. Catherine Labouré School in Wheaton, Md. (1981 – 1989). Sister served as principal at St. Joseph Villa in Richmond, Va. (1968 – 1970); and Portsmouth Elementary School in Portsmouth, Va. (1970 – 1975). She was an educational consultant for the Emmitsburg Province of the Daughters of Charity (1975 – 1981). In this position, she established a Learning Center in Emmitsburg to assist teachers, volunteers and aides. After her teaching career, Sister Mary Ann went to Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg as director of activities (1989 – 1998). In her later years, she served in the Ministry of Prayer, a ministry she held until her death.
Sister Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings. She is survived by her sisters, Sister Rita Bozel, D.C., of Emmitsburg; and Ann Delaney of Tampa, Fla.; nieces and nephews; and her Sisters in Community.
