A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Angela Cool, D.C., was held April 22, 2014, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg.
Sister Angela died April 14, 2014, at 94 years of age at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. On Oct. 18, 2013, she celebrated 72 years of vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Emmitsburg on May 28, 1919, Sister Angela was the oldest of 13 children born to George Joseph Cool and Alice Genevieve (Topper) Cool. She was baptized Evelyn Florence. Sister grew up in St. Joseph’s Parish in Emmitsburg and entered the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg in October of 1941.
Sister Angela earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education and English from St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg in 1969.
Sister Angela earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in social sciences and education from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg in 1965, and her Master of Arts degree in human development and social work from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1972.
Sister’s first mission was caring for children at St. Vincent’s Home in Landsdowne, Pa. (1942-1947). After leaving St. Vincent’s Home, she continued to care for children at the House of Providence in Syracuse, N.Y. (1947-1952); St. Joseph’s Villa in Richmond, Va. (1952-1965 and 1971-1977); Sarah Fisher Home in Farmington Hills, Mich. (1965-1967); and Astor Home in Rhinebeck, N.Y. (1968-1971). From 1977-1983, she served in the Activity Program with single mothers at Seton House in Richmond. In 1983, Sister Angela returned to her hometown of Emmitsburg to serve as thrift shop manager at Seton Center (1983-1989) and then as thrift shop manager at St. Matthew Mission in Spotsylvania, Va. (1989-1990). Her next two assignments were to serve in the activity departments of Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg (1990-1993) and St. Elizabeth Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Baltimore, Md. (1993-1996). While at St. Elizabeth’s she began ministering in pastoral care (1996-1999). This ministry of pastoral care continued when she moved to Our Lady Haven of Peace in Pensacola, Fla. (1999-2004). In 2004, Sister Angela was missioned to Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg where she served in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.
Sister Angela is survived by brothers J. Richard Cool of Thurmont, Md., and J. Seton Cool of Emmitsburg; sisters Mildred Sponseller of Hanover, Pa., Thelma Deathrage of Emmitsburg, and Frances (George) Hemler of Taneytown, Md.; nieces and nephews; and her Sisters in community. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Cletus, Allen, G. Albert, Lewis, Mary Alice Cool, Donald and M. Louise Cool.
