A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Rosa Daly, D.C., was celebrated July 5, 2014, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg.
Sister Rosa died July 1, 2014, at 95 years of age at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. In December 2013, she celebrated 76 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born June 12, 1919, in Washington, D.C., Sister Rosa was the youngest of six children born to Timothy and Susan (Hayes) Daly. She was baptized Eileen Daly. Sister Rosa was a 1937 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Washington, D.C., and she completed coursework at St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg; Boston College in Boston, Mass.; and Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Mo. Sister entered the Daughters of Charity in December of 1937 in Emmitsburg.
Her first mission was as a teacher at St. Vincent School in Detroit, Mich. (1939-1940). After leaving St. Vincent’s, Sister taught at St. Martin School in Baltimore, Md. (1940-1944), and then served in the Admitting Office at DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk Va. (1944-1945). The remainder of her ministries were in hospitals: St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport, Conn., (1945-1949) in Admitting; St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla., (1949-1957) as Business Manager; Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., (1957-1969) as Administrator; and Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C., (1969-1975) as Administrator. In 1975, she was missioned to St. Joseph Provincial House in Emmitsburg to serve as Administrator and Sister Servant (1975–1983) and then as Provincial Treasurer (1983–1988); and then to Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg to serve as Administrator and Sister Servant (1988-1992). In 1992, she returned to healthcare at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md. (1992-2004). Sister Rosa was missioned to the Ministry of Prayer at Villa Saint Michael in 2004. She enjoyed helping in the sewing room of St. Joseph House in Emmitsburg until the time of her death.
Sister Rosa’s siblings–Anna Marie, Joseph, Edward, Eugene and Francis–preceded her in death. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and her Sisters in Community.
