A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Marian Hagner, D.C., was celebrated Sept. 13, 2014, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg.
Sister Marian died Sept. 8, 2014, at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. She was 91 years of age and 70 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born Feb. 14, 1923, in Baltimore, Md., Sister Marian was one of five children born to Joseph and Johanna (Schaeffer) Hagner. She was baptized Marie Agnes Hagner. Sister Marian was a graduate of Seton High School in Baltimore. In 1959, Sister Marian earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in social science from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg. In 1965, she completed her Master of Arts degree in history at Villanova University in Villanova, Penn.
Sister Marian joined the Daughters of Charity Dec. 6, 1943, in Emmitsburg. In 1945, she went on her first mission to St. Vincent’s Home in Cambridge, Mass., where she served as a child care worker and teacher until 1949. Next, Sister Marian served as a child care worker at St. Vincent Home in Drexel Hill, Penn. (1949-1953). Sister then was missioned to Nazareth Home in Boston, Mass. (1957-1958); and then to Astor Home in Rhinebeck, N.Y. (1958-1959). Sister Marian then spent many years in education: St. Catherine Labouré School in Harrisburg, Penn. (1953-1957); St. Paul School in Portsmouth, Va. (1959-1967); and St. Joseph High School in Emmitsburg (1967-1970). From 1970 to 1977 she served as directress of the Seminary in Emmitsburg. Following that assignment, Sister was missioned to Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Md., as guidance counselor and local superior (1977-1983). In 1983, she returned to St. Joseph Provincial House as administrator and local superior. After six years in that ministry, she was missioned to St. Dominic School in Baltimore to serve as guidance counselor and local superior. Her next assignment was Greensboro, N.C., where she ministered at Pius X Parish and as local superior (1992-1998). In 1998, she returned to Baltimore to work in the Pastoral Care Department of St. Agnes Hospital (1998-2003) and later assumed a position as receptionist at St. Agnes Hospital (2003-2005). In 2005, Sister Marian was missioned to Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg where she served in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.
Sister Marian was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. She is survived by a sister, Mary Magdaline Dippold of Baltimore, nieces and nephews, and her Sisters in Community.
