Nukutere College honors Sisters
Nukutere College staff, students and parents of students put on a brilliant farewell for three Catholic Sisters who will leave next month after giving years of service in Rarotonga and the outer islands.
Students honored the Sisters through performances, gifts and a kaikai.
A group of Nukutere students who were part of the Blue Light youth development program did a special haka performance and two senior students danced for the Sisters.
The Sisters have offered their time and services to Nukutere College as well as various government and nongovernment agencies.
They have taught students music, as well as running phonics and after-school programs, and assisting with developing the disability center in Mauke.
The farewell was particularly emotional for Sister Margaret, who has lived in Rarotonga for 10 years. She has seen her young pupils start from grade 3 and progress through to grade 11.
During the Year 7 performance it dawned on her that she will not be able to witness their graduation.
Sister Margaret encouraged the students to keep the spirit of service alight in their lives.
“You have made my heart warm. I have received so much love and joy from each and every one of you. I have received more than I have given.”
Sister Margaret gifted the college with a flash drive containing photos of Nukutere students taken over the last 10 years.
“This really does feel like home,” Sister Patty said. “I’ve learned a lot and appreciate the rhythm of life, beauty of the island and generosity of the people.”
“Despite the aftermath of the fire, we would like to thank students and staff of Nukutere College for taking the time out to acknowledge us,” Sister Margaret said.
