‘Balm of Hope’ Tells Daughters of Charity Civil War Nurses’ Stories

August 31, 2015

Balm of Hope
“Balm of Hope” will be available Sept. 15, 2015

Stories from Daughters of Charity who served in the Civil War as nurses are compiled and shared in Balm of Hope: Charity Afire Impels Daughters of Charity Civil War Nurses, a new publication by Sister Betty Ann McNeil, D.C.

Sister McNeil’s discovery of 500 pages of handwritten memoirs by Daughters of Charity Civil War nurses led her into a multi-year project to transcribe, annotate, index and publish Balm of Hope. This compendium includes:

  1. Notes of the Sisters’ services in military hospitals
  2. Civil War recollections and accounts
  3. Correspondence

The text invites readers to listen to courageous women reminisce in their own words about nursing amid the ravages of war.

Balm of Hope will be available beginning Sept. 15, 2015, for $30 plus shipping and handling from the DePaul University Vincentian Studies Institute Collection at the Seton Heritage Shop of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Contact the Seton Heritage Shop through their website, by email at giftshopmanager@setonheritage.org, or at 301-447-7122.
