Following the Jan. 19 announcement by the Supreme Court of the United States that it will consider the Obama administration’s appeal of United States v. Texas, Sister Louise Gallahue, D.C., provincial of the Daughters of Charity Province of St. Louise, issued the following statement on behalf of the Province of 460 Sisters who serve in 15 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.:
“For more than 100 years, Daughters of Charity have embraced our gospel mandate to welcome the stranger by providing a host of direct services to the U.S. immigrant population. Along the way, we have repeatedly witnessed the economic, social and spiritual enrichment of this nation provided by our immigrant brothers and sisters. As such, we applaud the Supreme Court’s decision to hear the United States v. Texas case.
If it upholds President Obama’s executive actions that will defer deportation for contributing members of society, the Supreme Court will illustrate the values of true wisdom, just hospitality and righteous compassion that have always inspired this great nation of immigrants. We stand in solidarity with our immigrant brothers and sisters as we pray for a correct ruling that can eliminate the painful and constant fear of separation presently experience by 4 million families. We commit to vigilant and prayerful support for a ruling consistent with our values as citizens and Christians.”
