A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Evelyn McCarte, D.C., was celebrated March 8, 2016, at the Daughters of Charity DePaul House Chapel in Albany, N.Y. Burial followed at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands, N.Y. Sister Evelyn died March 5, 2016, at St. Louise House in Albany. She was 80 years of age and 62 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Melrose, Mass., Sept. 27, 1935, Sister Evelyn (baptized Evelyn) was one of four children born to Edward Eugene and Katherine Mary (Morissey) McCarte. Sister graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Melrose in 1953. She entered the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in December 1953.
Sister Evelyn earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Md., in 1968. Sister earned her Master of Social Work degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Penn., in 1972.
Following initial formation, Sister Evelyn served at Our Lady of Victory in Portsmouth, Va. (1955 to 1958); St. James in Johnson City, N.Y. (1958 to 1965); Seton High School in Baltimore, Md. (1965 to 1969); St. Joseph Hall in Philadelphia (1969 to 1977; Sister also served as the Local Community Superior there, 1973 to 1977); St. Catherine Center in Albany (1977 to 1979 and again August to November 1985); St. Anthony’s House in Bronx, N.Y. (1979 to 1980); DePaul Center in Vineland, N.J. (1980 to 1983); St. Vincent’s House in Albany (1983 to August 1985); Sacred Heart in Cohoes, N.Y. (1985 to 1993; while there, Sister also served as the Local Community Superior, 1985 to 1993; and as a Provincial Councillor for the former Northeast Province, 1987 to 1993); Sisters Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y. (1993 to 1996); Cathedral in Syracuse, N.Y. (1996 to 2003; while there Sister also served as the Local Community Superior for four New York Daughters’ Communities from 1999 to 2002); Marguerite Naseau in Ogdensburg, N.Y. (2003 to 2011; where she served as Local Community Superior from 2003 to 2004); DePaul House in East Brunswick, N.J. (2011 to 2013); and St. Joseph’s in Holbrook, Mass. (2014 to March 2016; Sister served as the Local Community Superior there from 2014 to March 2016).
Sister Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Betty. Sister Evelyn is survived by her sisters, Kay and Margie; her Sisters in Community; and many friends.
