Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul Sister Yvonne Thranow, D.C., died December 5, 2016, at the Daughters’ Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind. She was 89 years of age and 70 years vocation. The Funeral Mass for Sister Yvonne was celebrated December 9 at Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville.
Sister Yvonne was born August 16, 1927, in Los Angeles, Cal. Baptized Rita Yvonne, Sister was one of six children born to Frederick William and Margaret Mary (Ahern) Thranow. Sister Yvonne was a 1945 graduate of Catholic Girls’ High School in Los Angeles. Sister earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Fontbonne College (University) in St. Louis, Mo., in 1952, and she earned her Master’s in Social Work Degree from Saint Louis University in 1954. She entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis in November of 1946.
Following initial formation, Sister Yvonne was missioned to St. Patrick High School in Chicago where she taught (1947 to 1952). After completing her MSW Degree, Sister served as a Social Worker at Mt. St. Joseph in San Francisco, Cal., (1954 to 1967; during which time Sister served as the Local Community Superior from 1963 to 1967). Sister was missioned to the Marillac Provincial House in St. Louis, Mo., where she served as the Directress of the Juniorate (1967 to 1972; during which time Sister served as the Local Community Superior from 1968 to 1972). Sister served as Social Worker at Catholic Charities in Covington, Ky., (1972 to 1981; during which time Sister served as the Local Community Superior from 1973 to 1981), and St. Vincent Hospital and Health Services in Indianapolis, Ind., (1982 to 1985). Sister was then named the Executive Director of Marillac Social Center in Chicago, Ill., (1985 to 2003). Sister Yvonne was next missioned to Saint Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tenn., to serve as a Social Worker (2004 to 2007). In June of 2007, Sister Yvonne joined the Ministry of Prayer at Seton Residence in Evansville, where she served until the time of her death.
Sister Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Bernadine (Sister Marie Christine) Thranow, Patricia Neilson, Agnes Thranow, and Jerry Thranow; and her brother, Jack Thranow. Sister is survived by many nieces and nephews, friends, and her Sisters in Community.
