A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Edith Stricker, D.C. was celebrated February 7, 2017, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg. Sister Edith died January 31, 2017, at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. She was 98 years of age and 80 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Baltimore, Md., on April 19, 1918, Sister Edith (baptized Edith Teresa) was the fourth of eight children born to Charles Henry and Isabel Marie (Mason) Stricker. Sister Edith received her diploma from Seton High School in Baltimore, Md., in 1936, and she entered the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg in September 1936. Sister earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, Md., in 1960.
Following initial formation, Sister Edith taught at Our Lady of Victory School in Portsmouth, Va., (1937 to 1944); St. Mary School, Troy, N.Y., (1944 to 1945); St. Vincent Home, Saginaw, Mich., (1945 to 1952); St. Ann School, Bridgeport, Conn., (1952 to 1958); St. James School, Johnson City, N.Y., (1958 to 1960); Our Lady of Lourdes, Utica, N.Y., (1960 to 1967); and St. Catherine Labouré School, Wheaton, Md., (1967 to 1977). From 1977 to 1982, Sister Edith served at St. Patrick Parish in Fayetteville, N.C., as Parish Minister and Director of Religious Education. Then, Sister ministered as Director of Religious Education at Our Lady of the Valley Parish, Gloverville, S.C., (1982 to 1991). Sister returned to St. Catherine Labouré Parish in Wheaton to serve as Parish Minister from 1991 to 2004. In 2004, Sister joined the Ministry of Prayer at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, where she served until the time of her death.
Sister Edith was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings. She is survived by her sister, Marie Paiva of Rhode Island, nieces, nephews and her Sisters in Community.
