Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul Sister Claire Mulé, D.C., died February 16, 2017, at the Daughters’ Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind. She was 86 years of age and 68 years vocation. The Funeral Mass for Sister Claire was celebrated February 20 at Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville. Burial will be at St. Vincent Cemetery Number One in New Orleans, La.
Sister Claire was born May 28, 1930, in New Orleans, La. Baptized Josephine Claire, Sister was one of 11 children (one of whom was also a Daughter of Charity) born to Gabriel and Catherine (Amato) Mulé. Sister Claire was a 1946 graduate of Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans. Sister earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Fontbonne College (University) in St. Louis, Mo., in 1956, and she earned her Master’s Degree in Education Administration and Supervision from Loyola University, New Orleans, in 1970. Sister was a member of St. Augustine Parish in New Orleans when she entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis in October 1948.
Following initial formation, Sister Claire was missioned to St. Vincent Grade and High Schools in Donaldsonville, La., where she served as Elementary and Secondary Teacher and Librarian, (1949 to 1962). Sister next served as Principal, Teacher and Librarian at St. Joseph Grade School, New Orleans, (1962 to 1968); as Principal and Teacher at Notre Dame Grade School, Price, Utah, (1968 to 1969); as Principal at St. Stephen Grade School, New Orleans, (1969 to 1972); as Principal at St. Joseph High School, New Orleans, (1972 to 1975); and as Librarian at Seton Academy, (1975 to 1994) and Redeemer-Seton High School, (1994 to 2005), both in New Orleans. And, while in New Orleans, Sister served as Local Community Superior at the Daughters’ Cambronne Residence (1993 to 2000) and at the Daughters’ Charlotte Residence (2004 to 2006). Sister Claire was the recipient of the Mary Aquin Lorio Award of the New Orleans Chapter of the Catholic Library Association in 1993.
Following Hurricane Katrina, Sister Claire was missioned to Austin and Waco, Texas. She returned to New Orleans in entered the Ministry of Prayer at Chateau de Notre Dame in 2009; she served there until 2016 when she was missioned to continue her Ministry of Prayer at Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind.
Sister Claire was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Mary Mulé, Sarah Mulé, Sister Gabriel Mulé, D.C., Rose Noto, and Corinne Bonfield; and her brothers, Sam, Anthony, and John Mulé. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Mulé of New Orleans, and her brother, Judge Salvador T. Mulé of Folsom, La.; many nieces and nephews; and her Sisters in Community.
