Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul Sister Margaret Quinn, D.C., died April 30, 2017, at the Daughters’ Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind. She was 88 years of age and 71 years vocation. The Funeral Mass for Sister Margaret was celebrated May 5 at Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville.
Sister Margaret was born May 18, 1928, in Chicago, Ill. Baptized Marjorie Jean, Sister was one of 10 children born to Vincent Michael and Margaret (Harrison) Quinn. Two of Sister Margaret’s sisters also are Daughters of Charity. One of her brothers is a Vincentian priest of the Congregation of the Mission. Sister Margaret was a 1945 graduate of St. Patrick High School in Chicago. She entered the Community of the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis in December 1945.
Sister earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in History and Elementary Education from Fontbonne College (University), St. Louis, Mo., in 1952; she completed her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Saint Louis University in 1954.
Following initial formation, Sister Margaret was missioned to teach at St. Theresa School, New Orleans, La., (1946 to 1952). For the next two years, Sister Margaret worked toward her MSW Degree. Then, in 1954, Sister began her ministry in Social Work. She served as a Social Worker at St. Rose Home, Milwaukee, Wis., (1954 to 1964); and at Maryvale, South San Gabriel, Cal., (1964 to 1971). Sister served as Administrator at St. Vincent Home, Saginaw, Mich., (1971 to 1977; during this time, Sister also served as the Local Community Superior). She then served as a Social Worker at St. John’s Mission, Charleston, Miss., (1977 to 1979). Sister’s next mission was in Hernando, Miss., where she served as a Parish Minister with Catholic Social Services, (1979 to 1990; during this time Sister also served as the Local Community Superior from 1988 to 1990). Sister Margaret then began to serve in Province governance as Provincial Councillor for the former Mater Dei Province in Evansville, Ind., (1990 to 1999; during this time Sister also served as Provincial Assistant [1991 to 1999]).
Sister Margaret next served as an Outreach Worker at Catholic Charities in Effingham, Ill., (1999 to 2007). She completed a Provincial writing project at Seton Residence, Evansville, (2007 to 2008); then served as a Seminary Companion, Evansville, (2008 to 2011). Sister Margaret joined the Ministry of Prayer at Seton Residence in Evansville in 2011; she served there until the time of her death.
Sister Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, William Quinn; and her sister, Anne Quinn. She is survived by her sisters, Pauline Brewer, Joan Scully, Sister Mary Quinn, D.C., and Sister Katie Quinn, D.C.; and her brothers, Vincent Quinn, James Quinn, and Reverend Bernard Quinn, C.M.
