A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Maria Capobianco, D.C., was celebrated December 9, 2017, at DePaul House Chapel, Albany, N.Y. Burial followed at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands, N.Y. Sister Maria died at St. Louise House in Albany on December 3, 2017. Sister was 91 years of age and 65 years vocation.
Born in New York, N.Y., on December 14, 1925, Sister Maria was baptized Eva (Evelyn). She was the youngest of five daughters born to Alfred Pergentino (immigrant from Naples, Italy) and Maria (Carione); (immigrant from Bari, Italy) Capobianco. Sister Maria was a graduate of Yorkville High School in Manhattan, N.Y.; she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Md., in 1960; and her Nursing Diploma from Catherine Labouré College, Boston, Mass., in 1974. Sister Maria joined the Community of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in June of 1952 from St. Paul’s Parish, East Harlem, N.Y.
Following initial formation, Sister Maria served in the Admissions Offices at Providence Hospital, Washington, D.C., (1953) and Carney Hospital, Boston, Mass., (1954). Sister then taught at St. Michael, Overlea, Md., (1954 to 1959); St. Catherine Labouré, Wheaton, Md., (1959 to 1960); Mother Seton School, Emmitsburg, (1960 to 1966); Lourdes School, Utica, N.Y., (1966 to 1968); St. Mary’s School, Troy, N.Y., (1968 to 1969); St. Peter’s School, Wilmington, Del., (1969 to 1971); and St. James School, Johnson City, N.Y., (1971 to 1972). Upon completion of her Nursing Diploma, Sister Maria served at Carney Hospital, Boston, (1972 to 1975); and St. Mary’s Hospital, Troy, (1975 and 1985 to 1986). Sister served at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Utica, (1975 to 1978); as a Religious Education Teacher and Parish Minister at St. Agatha’s, Canastota, N.Y., (1978 to 1979 and 1983 to 1985); in the Health Office at Seton Catholic Central, Binghamton, N.Y., (1979 to 1982); at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, (1982 to 1983); at St. Elizabeth’s in Troy as Pastoral Care and Sacristan, (1986 to 1988); in Parish Outreach in Albany, (1988 to 1990); and as Parish Visitor and Eucharistic Minister at St. John’s Parish, Brooklyn, N.Y., (1990 to 2014). In February 2014, Sister Marie joined the Ministry of Prayer at St. Louise House in Albany where she served until the time of her death.
Sister Marie was preceded in death by her parents; and her sisters. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and her Sisters in Community.
