A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Janice Niemeyer, D.C., was celebrated September 4, 2018, at the Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville, Ind.; burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery, Evansville. Sister Janice died August 30, 2018, at Seton Residence in Evansville. Sister was 85 years of age and 66 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born July 1, 1933, in Kansas City, Mo., Sister Janice was one of three children born to Louis Frederick and Loretta (Halloran) Niemeyer. Sister graduated from Labouré High School in St. Louis, Mo., in 1951. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from the University of San Francisco, San Francisco, Cal., in 1961, and she earned her Master’s in Social Work Degree from Loyola University in Chicago, Ill., in 1968.
Sister Janice entered the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in St. Louis from Blessed Sacrament Parish in St. Louis in November 1951. Following initial formation, Sister taught elementary school at St. Theresa School, New Orleans, La., (1953 to 1956). She then served as a Group Mother at Mount St. Joseph in San Francisco, (1956 to 1961); and at Marillac Center, Kansas City, Mo., (1961 to 1966; there she also taught and served in administration). After completing her MSW, Sister was missioned to St. Elizabeth in San Francisco to serve as a Social Worker, (1968 to 1970). She next served at Guardian Angel Settlement Association in St. Louis, Mo., as a Case Worker, (1970 to 1972) and as Director (1972 to 1974). Sister’s next ministry was at St. Vincent Infant Home in New Orleans, as Child Care Director, (1974 to 1977) then as Child Care Assistant Administrator (1977 to 1979). Sister Janice’s was missioned to Marywood (Home of Holy Infancy) in Austin, Tex., where she served as a Social Worker (1979 to 1988). From 1988 to 2004, Sister Janice was the Director of Social Services at Marillac Social Center, Dallas, Tex. She remained in Dallas and served as Director of Financial Assistance for Catholic Charities, (2004 to 2008). Next, Sister served as a Volunteer in the health clinics of Daughters of Charity Services of New Orleans, (2009 to 2012). In June 2012, Sister Janice entered the Ministry of Prayer at Seton Residence in Evansville where she served until the time of her death.
Sister Janice was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brother, Robert Louis (Audrey) Niemeyer of Weslaco, Tex.; her sister, Marcella Mary Funck of Fort Madison, Iowa; nieces; nephews; her Sisters in Community; and many friends.
