Daughters at Lourdes Say Goodbye in Binghamton

May 8, 2017

A special mass held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Binghamton on Friday gave thanks to the Daughters of Charity, who have given so much to Lourdes Hospital and the local community for nearly a century.

The Daughters of Charity organization has been managing Lourdes Hospital since 1925. It has been a staple in Binghamton hospitals, churches, and schools for the past 92 years.

Members have dedicated their lives to health and spiritual care. The 365 Daughters who have come through Binghamton have touched countless lives.

“It’s been a privilege to work with the people in this area and to serve together and it has been a great opportunity for me to grow both as a Daughter of Charity and as a person because the people that I’ve worked with and served have called me forward to be a better Daughter of Charity, to be a better servant of God,” Sister Ellen Reilly told 12 News on Friday.

The Binghamton Daughters of Charity are being reassigned to Albany and Washington, D.C.

Lourdes Hospital says even though the sisters are handing over management to hospital leaders, Lourdes will remain a Catholic institution and will carry on the sisters’ mission.
