A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Agnes Power, D.C., was celebrated Oct. 7, 2014, at Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville, Ind. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville.
Sister Agnes died Oct. 5, 2014, of natural causes at Seton Residence. She was 99 years of age.
Born Dec. 1, 1914, in Nashville, Tenn., Sister Agnes was one of nine children born to Daniel and Katherine (Frazier) Power. She was baptized Mary Johanna Power.
Sister Agnes was a 1932 graduate of Cathedral High School in Nashville. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from Mt. St. Joseph-on-the-Ohio College in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1936. In 1972, Sister completed her master’s degree in education with a concentration in counseling from Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas.
Sister Agnes entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis in December 1938. At the time of her death, Sister Agnes had 75 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
After initial formation, Sister Agnes taught in secondary schools in Chicago, Ill.; Perryville, Mo.; and San Francisco, Calif.; until 1959. During the following years she acquired a graduate degree in counseling and brought her educational skills to another level, beginning her role as parish visitor and adult basic education teacher in San Antonio, where she served for more than 40 years (El Carmen/St. Leo, St. Leo Parish, Education Service Center Region XX, and the Patrician Movement). Many from St. Leo’s remember Sister Agnes fondly as the “heart and soul” of the Parish. In 2001, Sister Agnes received the Outstanding Service to Clients Award from the Patrician Movement for Adult Basic Education in San Antonio. Sister Agnes arrived at Seton Residence, Evansville, in 2002 to begin her Ministry of Prayer where she served until the time of her death.
Sister is survived by her brother, John Frazier Power of Nashville; many nieces and nephews; her Sisters in Community; and many friends.
