Sister Charles (Margaret Mary) Legg, age 82, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on January 21, 2024. She was the first born to parents, Margaret Mary (Sporrer) and William Charles Legg on December 31, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland. Before entering the Community, Sister Charles was a member of Saints Philip & James Parish in Baltimore. She graduated from Seton High School in 1960 and entered the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg on June 25, 1962. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education in 1970 from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg and her Master of Science in Secondary School Service from Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania in 1982.
Following initial formation, Sister Charles was missioned to serve as a teacher at the following schools: Our Lady of Lourdes School in Utica, New York; St. Catherine Labouré School in Wheaton, Maryland; St. Mary’s School in Rome, Georgia; Portsmouth Catholic School in Portsmouth, Virginia; Holy Cross Regional School in Lynchburg, Virginia; and Mother Seton School in Emmitsburg. In 2001, Sister Charles tutored and was a support staff member at St. Ann’s Infant Home in Hyattsville, Maryland. From 2006 until 2022, Sister Charles ministered as a math teacher, tutor and library volunteer at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Maryland. Teaching was Sister Charles’s passion and she loved to instill in her students a strong desire to think and learn. In 2022, Sister was missioned to Villa St. Michael for the Ministry of Prayer, a ministry she held until her death.
Sister Charles was preceded in death by her father who died in WWII (1944); her mother (2006); and aunt, Sister Mary Sporrer, Daughter of Charity. She is survived by her loving brother and sister-in-law, William “Bill” Charles and Frances Legg; a niece, Ann; and nephews; cousins; friends; and her Sisters in Community.
A Wake Service was held on January 25 in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg. The Mass of Christian Burial took place on January 26 in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, with interment in the Sacred Heart Cemetery on the grounds.
