A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Dorothea Huber, D.C., was celebrated December 29, 2012, at the Seton Chapel in Evansville, Ind. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville. Sister Dorothea died on December 25, 2012 at 76 years of age at the Daughters of Charity senior care residence, Seton Residence, in Evansville. In June 2012, she celebrated 59 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Perryville, Mo., on January 16, 1936, Sister Dorothea was one of two daughters born to Ralph and Dorothy (Geringer) Huber. Sister was named LaVerne May Huber at birth. After graduating from St. Vincent High School in Perryville in 1953, Sister Dorothea entered the Daughters of Charity at St. Philomena, St. Louis, Mo., in June of 1953.
After her initial formation as a Daughter of Charity, Sister Dorothea studied briefly at Fontbonne College in St. Louis. From 1955 to 1965, Sister was an elementary teacher at St. Stephen School, New Orleans, La.; St. Louise de Marillac School, St. Louis, Mo.; and St. Theresa School, Carson City, Nev. During that time, Sister Dorothea completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology at Marillac College, St. Louis. Beginning in the fall of 1965, Sister Dorothea attended Saint Louis University in St. Louis and earned her Master of Science Degree in Social Work in 1967. Sister was missioned to Milwaukee, Wis., as administrator, child care coordinator, and local superior at St. Rose Home and remained there for 10 years. For the next four years, Sister Dorothea served first as a social worker then as administrator and local superior at St. Vincent Day Care in Evansville, Ind. In 1981, Sister was appointed to the East Central Provincial Council.
After ministering as Councillor for Social Work and Provincial Assistant for nine years, Sister Dorothea served as the third Visitatrix (Provincial) of the East Central Province. After completion of her six-year term, Sister Dorothea was missioned to Chicago, Ill., as assistant executive director of St. Vincent de Paul Center. In 2002, Sister Dorothea returned to Evansville as the local superior of Seton Residence until 2008. Since that time, Sister has assisted with special projects and served in the Ministry of Prayer.
Sister Dorothea was preceded in death by her parents; she is survived by her sister, Clarita Griesbauer; her brother-in-law, Francis Griesbauer; her nephew, Jay; many cousins; friends; and her Sisters in Community.
