In Memoriam: Sister Edith Thompson, D.C.

Sister Edith (Elizabeth Ann) Thompson died on June 19, 2025, at Seton Residence in Evansville, Indiana. Sister Edith was born on February 3, 1928, in Huntsville, Alabama and was one of six children of Hays B. and Edith (McDermott) Thompson. Sister graduated from Bishop Toolen High School in Mobile, Alabama in 1947 and entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, Missouri in 1949.

After initial formation, Sister Edith served in the education ministry as a teacher from 1950 until 1974 in schools in St. Louis, Missouri, Dallas, Texas and Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. She earned a B.S. degree in Education and History from Fontbonne College in St. Louis and also received a certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education from St. Mary’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri and the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. In 1974, Sister Edith began her service in health ministry as a Chaplain and Director of Pastoral Care in hospitals in Dallas, Waco and El Paso, Texas, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Bridgton, Missouri. She also was a Docent at Seton Shrine in Emmitsburg for two years. In 2006, Sister Edith served as a receptionist at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas until she came to Seton Residence in Evansville to serve in the Ministry of Prayer.

A Wake Service was held on June 26, 2025, in the Seton Residence Chapel and the Mass of Christian Burial took place on June 27. Interment immediately followed in St. Joseph Cemetery. Sister was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters Edith Schmidt, Aimee Thompson and Mary Catherine Martin and her brothers Paul and Francis Hays Thompson. She is survived by other loving family members, her Sisters in Community, and many friends.
