Sister Ellen Marie (Jennie Ellen) Adams died on December 21, 2020 at Seton Residence in Evansville, Indiana. Sister Ellen Marie was born on May 22, 1928 in Marion, Indiana. She was one of ten children of Joseph and Minnie Adams. Sister graduated from Jefferson Township High School in Upland, Indiana in 1946 and entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, Missouri in 1948. After initial formation, Sister began her life of service in health care and social work with degrees in Nursing Education from DePaul University in Chicago (1954) and in Social Work from the University of Illinois, Chicago, (1975).
Sister Ellen Marie served as a Nurse and Supervisor in Nashville, Tennessee; Alton, Illinois; Dallas and Austin, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; St. Louis, Missouri; Montgomery, Alabama; Chicago, Illinois; and Birmingham, Alabama. In 1975, she began her service as a Social Worker in Evansville, Indiana and Montgomery, Alabama. In 1979 she was missioned to Indianapolis, Indiana to serve as a Pastoral Care Associate at St. Vincent Hospital. From 1984 until 1987 Sister Ellen Marie served as the Hospitality Coordinator at Mater Dei Provincialate in Evansville. She then continued her service as a Pastoral Care Associate at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville until she came to Seton Residence in 1991 to serve in the Ministry of Prayer.
Sister Ellen Marie was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville and a memorial Mass will take place at a later date. Sister was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, James and Charles Adams and John and William Marlow; and her sisters Laura Thomason and Josephine and Martha Adams, Bertha Davenport and Hallie Low. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, her Sisters in Community, and many friends.
