In Memoriam: Sister Gilbert Martin, D.C.

Sister Gilbert (Martha Velma) Martin died at Seton Residence in Evansville, Indiana on February 8, 2025. Sister was born on June 13, 1935, and is one of four children of Gilbert Bertrand and Mabel Marie (David) Martin. After graduating from Rayne High School in Rayne, Louisiana and Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in New Orleans, Louisiana, she entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, Missouri in June 1957.

After receiving a BSN in Nursing from Marillac College in St. Louis in 1960 and Orientation to Supervision at Mary’s Help Hospital in San Francisco, she served as Nursing Supervisor at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, California. She became Assistant Director of Nursing Service at DePaul Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri and then at Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas. Sister Gilbert then served in Pastoral Care at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado, St. Paul Medical Center in Dallas, Hotel Dieu Hospital in New Orleans, DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton, Missouri, Seton Medical Center and Holy Cross Hospital in Austin, Texas.

Sister was also Ministry Coordinator to the Homebound at Our Lady of Presentation Parish in Lee Summit, Missouri, Bereavement Coordinator at University Hospice Hospital in New Orleans and Coordinator of Ministry to the Sick and Homebound at St. James Major Parish in New Orleans.

Sister was then sent to assist the Senior Sisters at Sarah Community in Bridgeton, Missouri and then to Evansville, Indiana where she served in Pastoral Care at VNA PLUS John and Betty Charlier Hospice Center and St. Anthony Parish until 2017 when she came to Seton Residence to serve in the Ministry of Prayer, a ministry she served in until the time of her death.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, February 11, in the Seton Residence Chapel followed by burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Sister Gilbert was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Carita McClatchey, and she is survived by her sisters Heloise Cassidy and Yvonne Menard, other loving family members, many friends and her Sisters in community.
