A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Marie Seitz, D.C., was celebrated Feb. 19, 2013, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg.
Sister Marie died Feb. 17, 2013, at 82 years of age at Villa St. Michael, the Daughters of Charity senior care residence, in Emmitsburg. In December of 2012, she celebrated 60 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Oneida, N.Y., on Sept. 9, 1930, Sister Marie was the daughter of George and Clara (Wolff) Seitz. She was baptized Marie Seitz and attended St. Joseph’s Parish in Oneida as she grew up.
After completing her secondary education, Sister Marie entered the Daughters of Charity Community in 1952. She attended St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Md., where she graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in secretarial science with a minor in elementary education. In 1979, Sister Marie earned her Master of Arts degree in business education from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Sister Marie ministered as a teacher for many years in Baltimore (as an elementary education teacher 1960 – 1962 at St. John’s and 1962 – 1975 at St. Martin’s). She also served as a secondary teacher at Bishop England School in Charleston, S.C. (1975 – 1980), and at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Md. (1980 – 1981).
Following her years in education, Sister Marie served at St. Joseph Provincial House in the business office and as a liturgist from 1981 to 1996. She served in pastoral care at St. Catherine Laboure Manor in Emmitsburg from 1996 to 2002. In 2003, Sister Marie joined the Ministry of Prayer at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg.
Sister Marie is survived by one brother, Reverend Paul Seitz of Charleston, S.C.
