A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Marie Yetter, D.C., was celebrated March 3, 2013, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg.
Sister Marie died Feb. 23, 2013, at 94 years of age at Villa St. Michael, the Daughters of Charity senior care residence in Emmitsburg. In December of 2012, she celebrated 76 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Washington, D.C., on April 30, 1918, Sister Marie was the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Glorious) Yetter. She was named Doris Marie Yetter at birth. She entered the Community of the Daughters of Charity in September of 1936.
Sister Marie graduated from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Md., in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business education with a minor in social studies. In 1957, she earned her master’s degree from Boston College, Boston, Mass., in education with a concentration in guidance.
Her first years of ministry were at St. Joseph Welfare Center in Oneida, N.Y. (1938 – 1945). She then served at St. Vincent Home in Saginaw, Mich. (1945 – 1949). She served at St. Vincent Home and School in Washington, D.C. (1949 – 1951), then Sister taught at Norfolk Catholic School in Norfolk, Va. (1951 – 1958). Sister Marie then returned to Washington, D.C., where she served as principal at Immaculate Conception Academy (1958 – 1960). From there, Sister Marie served as principal at St. Patrick School in Richmond, Va. (1960 – 1961); then, she spent nine years in Norfolk, Va., at Norfolk Catholic School as guidance counselor (1961 – 1970). Her next mission was to Seton High School in Baltimore where she served as guidance counselor (1970 – 1974). She served two years as principal at Holy Cross Regional School in Lynchburg, Va. (1974 – 1976), then Sister returned to Baltimore to serve as principal at Seton High School (1976 – 1982).
After ending her education career, Sister Marie was next assigned as hospital education director first at De Paul Medical Center, Norfolk, Va. (1982 – 1983); and later at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md. (1983 – 1990). In 1990, she was appointed administrative liaison at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla., where she served for 14 years before retiring to Villa Saint Michael in Emmitsburg in 2004.
