A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary Carol Mautemps, D.C., was celebrated January 26, 2018, at the Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville, Ind.; burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery, Evansville. Sister Mary Carol died January 23, 2018, at Seton Residence in Evansville. She was 92 years of age and 74 years of vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in New Orleans, La., on May 21, 1925, Sister Mary Carol (baptized Shirley Mary) was one of three children born to Eugene J. and Lucy (Landry) Mautemps. She graduated from St. Stephen’s High School in New Orleans in 1943 and entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, Mo., from St. Stephen’s Parish, New Orleans, in September 1943. Sister Mary Carol earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education at Fontbonne College (now University) in St. Louis in 1953; she completed her Master of Education Degree in Administration in 1975 at Loyola University, New Orleans. Sister also completed Gerontology Certification from Auburn University, Montgomery, Ala., in 1989.
Following initial formation, Sister Mary Carol taught Elementary School at St. Malachy (1944 to 1945) and St. Patrick School in St. Louis (1945 to 1952). She then was missioned to San Francisco where she taught at St. Patrick School there (1952 to 1954). Sister next taught at St. Vincent High School, Perryville, Mo., (1954 to 1958); St. Theresa School, Carson City, Nev., (1958 to 1960); St. Vincent School in Mobile, Ala., (1960 to 1961); Holy Trinity School in Dallas, Tex., (1961 to 1965); St. Vincent School, Donaldsonville, La., (1965 to 1967); and Notre Dame School in Price, Utah, (1967 to 1968). Sister was once again missioned to Alabama where she served as Principal at St. Barnabas School, Birmingham, (1968 to 1976) and St. James Major School, Prichard, (1976 to 1982; during which time Sister also served as Local Community Superior from 1979 to 1982).
From 1984 to 1985, Sister Mary Carol ministered as a Pastoral Care Associate at St. Vincent Hospital, Birmingham. She served as Administrator of Seton Haven, Montgomery, Ala., (1993 to 2002). Sister Mary Carol joined the Ministry of Prayer at Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind., in 2002; she served there until the time of her death.
Sister Mary Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Eugene and Donald Mautemps. She is survived by her niece, Dawn Mautemps; and her Sisters in Community.
