A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary Eugenia Hultman, D.C., was celebrated March 22, 2013, in the Chapel at Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville.
Sister Mary Eugenia died March 20, 2013, at 94 years of age at Seton Residence in Evansville. In November of 2012, she celebrated 72 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Chicago, Ill., on Jan. 9, 1919, Sister Mary Eugenia was the daughter of Bernard Sigfred Hultman and Marie E. (Meli) Hultman. Sister was named Mary Eugenia Hultman at birth.
Sister Mary Eugenia graduated from St. Patrick High School in Chicago, Ill., in 1937. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in education with a minor in social studies from Fontbonne College (now University) in St. Louis, Mo., in 1949.
Sister Mary Eugenia entered the Community of the Daughters of Charity in November of 1940. After her initial formation, Sister Mary Eugenia began a life of service in education and parish ministry. She served as a preschool and Kindergarten teacher at Guardian Angel Settlement in St. Louis, Mo., from 1941 to 1950. Sister ministered as a group home mother at St. Elizabeth Home in New Orleans, La., (1950 to 1952), and then as a primary teacher in New Orleans at St. Stephen Grade School (1952 to 1958). She then taught school in Carson City, Nev.; San Francisco, Calif.; and Phoenix, Ariz. In 1969, Sister Mary Eugenia returned to Louisiana and taught primary grades at St. Vincent Grade School in Donaldsonville from 1969 to 1971. From 1971 to 1974, Sister served in Austin, Texas, as a file clerk and librarian, and then began her ministry as a parish visitor at Guadalupe Cathedral Parish in Dallas, Texas, where she served from 1974 to 1980 except for one year from 1978 to 1979 when she served at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine in Emmitsburg, Md., as a hostess. For one year, 1980 to 1981, Sister ministered in pastoral care at St. Paul Medical Center in Dallas. In 1981, she returned once again to Louisiana and served until 1990 at Southern Baptist Hospital as a patient visitor; and from 1990 to 1992 at Kenner Adult Day Health Care Center in Kenner, La., as an adult day care worker. Sister also served in the Archives and as a care center volunteer before entering the Ministry of Prayer at Villa St. Louise in St. Louis, Mo., in 1995. In 1997, Sister moved to Seton Residence in Evansville where she lived until her death.
Sister Mary Eugenia is survived by her stepbrother, Ralph Thomas, of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; many nieces and nephews; many friends; and her Sisters in Community.
