A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary Jean Horne, D.C., was celebrated May 24, 2014, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Md. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg.
Sister Mary Jean died May 17, 2014, at 87 years of age at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. On Dec. 5, 2013, she celebrated 67 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born Oct. 27, 1926, in Baltimore, Md., Sister Mary Jean was one of four children born to Duncan and Mary (Zell) Horne. She was baptized Mary Jean.
Sister grew up in St. Joseph Monastery Parish in Baltimore and entered the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg in December of 1946. Sister Mary Jean earned her Bachelor of Science degree in secretarial science and English from St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg in 1952. In 1971, she completed her Master of Arts degree in business education from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Sister’s first mission was to St. Vincent Home and School in Washington, D.C., where she served as a child care provider and bookkeeper (1948–1951). She then was missioned to St. Benedict School in Greensboro, N.C., as a teacher (1951–1952). She served as administrative secretary and bookkeeper at the Astor Home in Rhinebeck, N.Y. (1953–1954). From 1954 to 1969, Sister served as a teacher in these schools: Holy Cross School in Lynchburg, Va. (1954–1957); Seton Catholic High School in Endicott, N.Y. (1957–1958); Utica Catholic Academy in Utica, N.Y. (1958–1964); and Bishop England High School in Charleston, S.C. (1964–1969). Sister completed her Master’s degree and then began to serve as a teacher at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Md. (1970–1983). Sister then served as the communications coordinator for the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg (1983–1990). She was then missioned to St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, where she served in pastor care (1990–1994). Sister’s remaining ministries included assistant and bookkeeper at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg (1994–2000); Seton Shrine docent (1998–2002); donations coordinator at the Seton Shrine (2002–2009); and special projects for the former Southeast Province (2009–2010). In 2010, Sister Mary Jean entered the Ministry of Prayer at Villa St. Michael; she served there until her death.
Sister Mary Jean was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. She is survived by her brother, Roland J. Horne, of Baltimore; nieces; nephews; and her Sisters in Community.
