A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Regina Loughlin, D.C., was celebrated Jan. 5, 2013, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Sister Regina was buried in the Sacred Heart Cemetery on the grounds of St. Joseph House in Emmitsburg, Md.
Sister Regina died Dec. 29, 2012, at 92 years of age at Gettysburg Hospital in Gettysburg, Penn.; she was a resident of Villa St. Michael, the Daughters of Charity senior care residence, in Emmitsburg. In December of 2012, she celebrated 75 years vocation as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Utica, N.Y., on Feb. 9, 1920, Sister Regina was one of four children born to David and Catherine (McCann) Loughlin. She was baptized Rita Elizabeth Loughlin.
After completing her secondary education at Utica Catholic Academy, Sister Regina entered the Daughters of Charity in December of 1937. Sister Regina earned her Bachelor of Science degree in English with a minor in social science from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg in 1953. In 1966, she completed her Master of Arts degree in French with a minor in education at Rivier College in Nashua, N.H.
Most of her years in ministry were served teaching and as principal in schools in Baltimore, Md. (spring of 1939); Washington, D.C. (fall of 1939 – 1955); Y0ungstown, Ohio (1956 – 1958); Troy, N.Y. (1961 – 1963); Wheaton, Md. (1977 – 1979); and Martinsburg, W.V. (1981-1982). Sister Regina served as administrator for six years at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine in Emmitsburg (1982 – 1988). She also served in formation as assistant seminary directress (1958 – 1961) and director of Postulants (1963 – 1969), and she served at the Daughters of Charity Motherhouse in Paris, France, as a secretary from 1969 to 1975. For 15 years, from 1988 to 2003, Sister Regina ministered in pastoral care at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C.
In 2003, Sister Regina joined the Ministry of Prayer in Emmitsburg, Md. She lived in Emmitsburg until the time of her death.
Sister Regina is survived by her sister, Patricia Essel, of Central Square, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her brother, Francis (Bud) Loughlin, and her sister, Katherine Joan Dodge.
