Sister Sherry (Dorothy Sharon) Barrett died at Seton Residence on October 26, 2023. Sister was born on March 12, 1938, in Grosse Point, Detroit, Michigan and was one of five children of John Joseph and Analie Caroline (Maurer) Barrett. She graduated from St. Mary High School in Mount Clemens, Michigan and entered the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg, Maryland in 1957.
She received her BA in Elementary Education from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, Maryland and earned a certificate in Titular por Antiguedad Columbia from Teachers of Bolivia, South America and Institute of Special Education, Panama, Central America in 1982, and an MPS in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University in Chicago in 1987.
Sister served as an elementary teacher at St. Mary’s School in Troy, New York (1959-1962) and St. Joseph School in Petersburg, Virginia ((1962-1967). After a year of study in Cochabamba, Bolivia (1967-1968), Sister served as an elementary and secondary teacher at Hogar San Jose in in LaPaz, Bolivia (1968-1971), Collegio Madre Seton in Trinidad, Bolivia (1971-1979) and Casa de Caridad in Santa Cruz, Bolivia (1980-1985).
Sister Sherry spent several years in study; then, began serving in Hispanic Ministry at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan (1988-1991), Catholic Charities in Fort Wayne, Indiana (1991-1992) and as a Missionary in Maya Tecun, Mexico, Ixcan, Guatemala, Cochabamba, Bolivia and the Fiji Islands (1992-1999). After two years as a Driver at Seton Residence in Evansville, Indiana, Sister Sherry returned to Hispanic Ministry to serve the Diocese of Jackson, Mississippi (2002-2006) and St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville (2007-2013), where she also served as an Advocate and Interpreter. Sister was a volunteer at St. Joseph Mission in Keams Canyon, Arizona (1999-2000) and in Parish Outreach at St. Cyprian Parish in Georgetown, South Carolina (2014-2018). She then came to Seton Residence in Evansville to serve as a Driver until entering the Ministry of Prayer, which she continued to serve in until the time of her death.
A Wake Service was held on October 30 in the Seton Residence Chapel, and the Mass of Christian Burial took place on October 31 in the Seton Chapel, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents, and she is survived by her sisters Mary Sheila Barrett and Sister Joan Ann Barrett, D.C., her brothers John and Patrick, loving family members, her Sisters in Community and many friends.
