Laudato Si

Praise Be to You, Lord

Care for Our Common Home

In 2015, Pope Francis published his encyclical, Laudato Si, in which he invites the whole world, on every level, to transform the way we live in order to protect the life of our planet and all creatures, especially those living in poverty. As Daughters of Charity, we have accepted this invitation.

We realize that those who are poor are the most vulnerable and the first to be threatened by the climate crisis. We are called to respond to this reality through lifestyle actions and by advocating to bring about transformation to support sustainable practices. The Province of St. Louise has joined the Laudato Si Action Platform, a 7-year process toward sustainability and integral ecology.

Ways to Live Laudato Si

RESPONSE TO THE CRY OF THE EARTH: Plant native trees and perennial flowers to provide habitat and food for all.

RESPONSE TO THE CRY OF THE POOR: Compost food scraps to remove food waste from incinerators or landfills, most often located in low income neighborhoods.

ECOLOGICAL ECONOMICS: Divest from fossil fuels and invest in renewable solar and wind energy.

ADOPTION OF SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLES: Eat more plant-based meals, reduce meat consumption, shop at local farmers markets.

ECOLOGICAL EDUCATION: Learn more about how our planet can flourish with us. You can start with this video.

ECOLOGICAL SPIRITUALITY: Take a moment to notice the beauty of the natural world and thank God for creation. Watch this prayer from the International Daughters of Charity.

COMMUNITY RESILIENCE AND EMPOWERMENT: Advocate for an issue in your community. For example, protection of waterways, access to renewable energy sources, public transportation, air quality, etc.
