A funeral mass for Sister Audrey Bergfeld, D.C., was celebrated Nov. 5, 2012, at the Anna House Chapel in the Sarah Community in Bridgeton, Mo. Interment was Nov. 6 at Marillac Cemetery in Normandy, Mo.
Sister died Nov. 3, 2012, at 86 years of age. Born in St. Louis, Mo., on Jan. 5, 1926, Sister Audrey was the daughter of Frank C. Bergfeld and Wilhelmina F. (Dietz) Bergfeld and one of four children. Sister Audrey entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, Mo., in 1947. Sister Audrey celebrated 65 years as a Daughter of Charity in April.
During her early years in the Community, Sister Audrey served as housemother and teacher in Mobile, Ala. (1948 to 1950); an elementary school teacher in Natchez, Miss. (1950 to 1955); and as organist, music coordinator, and music instructor at Marillac College in Normandy, Mo. (1955 to 1961). While studying at DePaul University, she served as a teacher at St. Patrick High School in Chicago, Ill. (1962 to 1963). Sister served as a music coordinator at Catholic schools in New Orleans, La. (1964 to 1970); a music teacher at Catholic schools in the St. Louis Archdiocese (1970 to 1975) and at St. Catherine Labouré in Sappington, Mo. (1975 to 1983); as a music teacher and assistant principal at Holy Trinity School in Dallas, Texas (1983 to 1987); as a music teacher and computer teacher at St. Augustine School in Dallas (1987 to 1996); as bookstore manager at Ursuline Academy in Dallas (1996 to 1999); then she served in various roles at the former Marillac Provincial offices and Provincial House in Normandy, and at Naomi House in the Sarah Community (1999 to 2007). In December of 2009, Sister Audrey entered the Ministry of Prayer at Anna House in the Sarah Community.
Sister Audrey earned her high school diploma from Rosati-Kain High School in St. Louis in 1943. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a minor in education from Fontbonne College (now University) in St. Louis in 1954, and her Master of Music Education degree with an emphasis in piano from DePaul University in Chicago in 1966. She held lifetime teaching certification in elementary and music education in Missouri.
Sister Audrey’s brothers, Bradford O. Bergfeld, Carl G. Bergfeld, and Francis A. Bergfeld, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Bergfeld of Florissant, Mo.; two nieces, Debbie VanHorn of Florissant and Barbara Ermold, of St. Louis; and her Sisters in Community.
