Where did this custom originate? You know better than I that good Christian ceremonies are ancient, beginning with the Gospel and the Epistles of Saint Paul. The first Christians had the custom of visiting one another, sympathizing with and consoling one another. Those duties of friendship have come down to us and have a Christian foundation; that’s what they did, and we still do it.
